Mary Buchmelter

BUCHMELTER, Mary Catherine, 72, of Queretaro, Mexico, passed away peacefully Monday, January 27, 2014 in her home, after a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer.

She was born November 24th, 1941 to John and Mary Buchmelter of Mingo Junction, OH.

She is survived by her brother, John F. Buchmelter; and sisters, Clementine Cacciacarro and Rita Castanon.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Delores Stewart.

Mary Catherine (Maria to her friends) raised three children, Debra, David and Michael Shumard, with their father, David Shumard Sr. from whom she was divorced.

Mary Catherine married Dr. Robert Hall in 1981. After having been a homemaker, she returned to college in her thirties, earning a B.A in Psychology from the University of Steubenville (1979) and her Juris Doctorate from West Virginia University College of Law (1984).

She embarked on a career as a public interest lawyer, defending the rights of people with disabilities, and served as Deputy Attorney General for Civil Rights in West Virginia appearing frequently before the West Virginia Supreme Court. In 1998 she was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. She was involved in writing the Americans with Disabilities Act and was named Woman of the Year in Public Service in 1999.

In 2003 Mary Catherine and her husband retired to Queretaro, Mexico. She became fluent in Spanish, and gave university lectures on human rights in Michoacan and Quertaro. She was an avid reader and a world traveler. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 32 years, Bob Hall, her children Debra, David and Michael Shumard, her step- daughters, Karen Harrigan, Kristin Romitti, and Lauren Hall, and her grandchildren Zach and Shaw Harrigan, Nick and Kyle Romitti, and Rowynn Hall-Davis.

Maria had hundreds of friends and acquaintances all over the world.

In her memory, give someone a compliment, help a cherished friend, make someone smile. Do it with style. She would have loved that.
