Weir High student had gun
WEIRTON A 15-year-old female student carried a handgun to Weir High School Wednesday, according to Hancock County Schools officials.
When contacted this morning, Hancock County Superintendent Sue Smith explained school officials were notified and began investigating. The gun was not loaded, according to Smith, contrary to some reports.
“The prevention resource officer was informed of the situation and reacted quickly,” Smith said. “Administrators investigated immediately and followed proper procedure and protocol.”
The officer confiscated the weapon before police arrived. According to Smith, the student had no intent to harm anyone.
“The situation was that she didn’t realize at the time she left home that she had it with her.” Smith said. “She did not intend to bring it to school.”
As a juvenile, the student’s name cannot be released.
Calls to the Weirton Police Department and Weir High School for comment were not immediately returned.
