Holy Resurrection Serbian Church

to celebrate patronal feast Sunday

Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church of Steubenville will celebrate its 107th patronal feast or slava on Sunday.

The church celebrates as its feast the Dedication of the Church of the Holy Resurrection (also known as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher) in Jerusalem, which took place in the fourth century.

The celebration will begin with the Divine Liturgy, a procession around the church and a memorial service for all departed members at 10 a.m. It will continue with a banquet at the church’s Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton, beginning at 1 p.m.

Honored members or kumovi for the day are Mr. and Mrs. Bronko Dopudja of Chester.

Yard sale, bake sale Oct. 5 at

Bloomingdale United Methodist

The New Beginners Women’s Circle of Bloomingdale United Methodist Church will hold its annual yard sale and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 5 in the social hall located in the lower level of the church.

Brooke County Salvation Army offers

lunches on Wednesday and Friday

The Brooke County Salvation Army Service Center at 401 Commerce St. (state Route 2), Wellsburg, offers home-cooked meals from noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday and Friday.

Local volunteers prepare the meals, which have included creamed turkey on biscuits, ham and rice casserole, penne pasta and sausage sauce and beef stew, and serve them cafeteria style. Everyone is welcome.

The Salvation Army also needs volunteers to work from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to prepare and assist with the meals and cleanup. Those interested should call (304) 737-0071.

Starkdale chicken grill generates $1,631 for Abigail’s Angels charity

Starkdale Presbyterian Church of Steubenville held its bi-annual chicken grill on Sept. 21, generating a profit of $1,631.

The proceeds were donated to Abigail’s Angels charity which goes toward funding research for curing a specific type of childhood blindness called Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis or LCA.

Holy Trinity Philoptochos Society

to host dinner on Thursday

The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos Society will host a dinner for the Serbian and Russian Orthodox women of Jefferson County on Thursday.

The start of the 2013-14 season for the society ushered in a membership drive dinner meeting on Sept. 5 at Lancelot’s Restaurant with Rikki Kamarados, president, presiding. There were 29 members present at the meeting where the Rev. Nicholas Halkias gave the opening prayer.

The society ended its 2012-13 season with a luncheon held May 16 at Janoski Farm Restaurant with then-president Marianne Balakos, president, presiding. Eighteen members were on hand for the event, which included shopping at the market.

The June 2 meeting brought the swearing-in of the newly elected board and officers by Halkias. The new officers, in addition to Kamarados as president, are: first vice president, Christine Joyce; second vice president, Louise Kronstein; treasurer, Mary McElhaney; assistant treasurer, Neove Young; recording secretary, Georgiann Hart; and corresponding secretary, Millie Mougianis.

Charities being supported by the Philoptochos include: June, Special Olympics; September, Athena’s Closet; and October, Women In Action Against Cancer Coalition.

Weirton Covenant Church to hold

World Help Charity Auction

The Weirton Covenant Church will hold a World Help Charity Auction and sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the church located at 200 Pennsylvania Ave.

The auction begins at 2 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held Oct. 12.

Toronto Bible Methodist Church

The Toronto Bible Methodist Church is planning a special service Sunday with morning services at 10 a.m., followed by dinner on the lawn, then a service of music at 2 p.m.

The public is invited to “come join in, singing the old songs, telling the old story.”

‘Baba’s Sampler’ on Oct. 10 at

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church will hold a “Baba’s Sampler” dinner and bake sale from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 10.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church

St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 300 Three Springs Drive, Weirton, will hold a fall rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 12.

The church will hold a holiday bazaar Nov. 16, including crafts, a soup and sale lunch and bake sale.

The Italian-American Cultural Club will be celebrating a Roman Catholic Mass in the Italian language on Friday. The Mass will be held at 6 p.m. with a light dinner following at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Mingo Junction.

having two-day rummage sale

Two Ridges Presbyterian Church, 1085 Canton Road, Wintersville, will host its annual two-day rummage sale on Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Grace Lutheran Church to hold

English tea on Oct. 12

Grace Lutheran Church, 2105 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, will host an English tea on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. featuring a Gold Canyon candle sale.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Vito Suppa Transplant Fund. Suppa is on the waiting list for a liver transplant at the Cleveland Clinic.

“Many of the fancy cookies being served that day will be provided by Aubrey’s Bakery,” a spokesperson said. “Everyone is welcome to attend. Have your favorite tea cup and a friend accompany you to the event.”
