Library’s Kid’s Knitting Group

set to meet Wednesdays

WELLSBURG – The Brooke County Library’s Kid’s Knitting Group will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the library’s River Room.

Youth in third grade or higher can learn to knit with help from instructor Nora Bell. Bring your yarn and needles or loom to start creating.

Church to sell lunches

WELLSBURG – Christ Episcopal Church will resume its monthly roast beef sandwich lunch sales from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at the church located at 1014 Main St.

The cost is $6.50 for the lunches, which also include chips, beverage and a slice of mandarin orange sheet cake. Individual sandwiches are $4.50 each.

Delivery to businesses and shut-ins is available by calling (304) 737-3432 after 8:30 a.m. that day.

Auction to benefit CASA

WELLSBURG – A quarter auction will be held during the Brooke County Fair to benefit A Child’s Place Court-Appointed Special Advocate, a nonprofit group that trains volunteers to represent the rights of children involved in abuse and neglect cases in Brooke and Hancock counties.

Fairgoers are invited to stop by CASA’s booth at at Brooke Hills Park at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 and check out the assorted items up for bid in the auction, which will begin at 7 p.m.

Story hours set

FOLLANSBEE – The Follansbee Branch Library will hold story hours at noon Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30 for children, ages 2-5, and their caregivers.

Retirees to hear superintendent

WELLSBURG – The Brooke County Association of Retired School Employees will hear from Brooke County Superintendent Kathy Kidder-Wilkerson at their Sept. 10 meeting.

All new and past retirees are invited to join the group, which meets for fellowship and programs of interest to them, said leaders.

The meeting will be at Franklin United Methodist Church, with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. Lunch reservations should be made by calling Ruth Lewis at (304) 737-2314 no later than Tuesday.

The group has selected as its community service outreach backpack food programs Brooke County children and the Brooke County Animal Shelter.

Chatham holding memorial

PITTSBURGH – Chatham University’s Office of Student Affairs will hold a public memorial service at 4 p.m. Sept. 11 on the Shadyside Campus Quad to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The service will include a moment of silence, a speaker and the Chatham University Choir performing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” There will be 1,498 flags displayed, one for every two victims of the attack.

Connected Threads to meet

SLOVAN, Pa. – Connected Threads, a Burgettstown Presbyterian Church mission group, will meet for Bible study and to make afghans and other items for women in need from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 12, at the church located at 15 Nicholas St.

Beginners and advanced knitters are welcome. Basic knitting and crocheting will be taught to anyone who wants to learn. All yarn and supplies are provided at no cost.

The group will be working on slippers, afghans and items for the Washington Women’s Shelter.
