Purple Circle plans

Saturday dinner

The Purple Circle 4-H Club will hold its annual dinner fundraiser from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the East Springfield Community Center located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.

The menu will include spaghetti, a salad bar, bread, dessert and drink with patrons able to dine in or get carryout.

Orders can be placed by calling (740) 543-3700. The cost will be $7 for those 11 and older and $4 for those 10 and under.

The event also will include a silent auction for a framed and matted Dave Barnhouse print from 3 p.m. through 6:45 p.m.

Modern Woodmen of America also is helping with the fundraiser, matching up to $1,200.

At the club’s March 17 at the center, Tom Wedlake attended with the K-9 dog and provided search demonstrations. State Trooper Eric Darrington gave a presentation on the dangers of drugs, drunk driving and texting and driving.

Backwoods Gang

Backwoods Gang gathered at the Smithfield Evangelical Friends Church on April 14 for an appreciation dinner, thanking the pastor and church members for use of the facilities there.

A meeting followed with thank-you cards signed for the Smithfield Police Department which purchased the members’ 4-H shirts.

The club will hold a bake sale Saturday at the Loading Zone in Bloomingdale and Super C in Smithfield.

The meeting also included discussion of upcoming events, classes and activities and 4-H projects.

The next meeting will be held May 5.

County Council

meets April 24

The Jefferson County Council of the American Legion Auxiliary will meet in Dillonvale on April 24 at 6 p.m., a new time.

The guest speaker will be Laurel DuBeck, community education coordinator from Region 9, Area Agency on Aging, whose presentation will combine humor, health and relaxation exercises that promote rest, peaceful sleep and stress reduction.

All current dues-paying members of a Legion auxiliary are invited. Lunch will be served by the hosts with RSVPs appreciated by calling Mary Ulczynski at (740) 769-7773 or Mariann Ebright at (740) 733-8158.

The Legion is located on state Route 150 at 213 Liberty St., Dillonvale.

The meeting will include nominations for new county council officers for the 2013-14.
