Area resident wants to urge creativity
ATLASBURG, Pa. – Brenda Inches wants area crafters to take the time out of their day to pursue and enjoy their hobbies and to encourage those interested to take it up.
The Craft and Hobby Association is behind the Cre8 Time movement, a social media-driven effort to spend eight hours a month enjoying their hobbies, even if it is for a few minutes at a time, and to share their experiences and knowledge with others.
As an effort to spur the development of a local Cre8 Time group, Inches will hold Cre8 Time events and is looking to work with other local organizations interested in hosting or sponsoring meetings.
“You don’t have to turn your life over to crafting, it’s a pleasure, a hobby,” said Inches.
Initial meetings will be held at 4 p.m. March 13 at the Avella Area Public Library located at 11 School Court and at 6 p.m. at the Burgettstown Community Library located at 2 Kerr St. During the meetings, Inches will provide an Easter-themed card craft and hopes to discuss ideas and future meetings. Coloring pages will be provided for small children. The meeting open to the public, and there will be no cost for the materials.
“It doesn’t have to be all scrapbooking or card-making,” she said. “Those are popular, but we are open to anyone who crafts or wants to craft – quilters, crocheters, knitters, anyone. It is open to everyone of any age or skill level.”
Inches added the meetings will be family friendly. She would like to see parents and children or grandparents and children attending the meetings together and sharing a common interest.
After the initial meetings, Inches said she hoped to see those involved meeting regularly to craft together, proposing that those interested in the same crafts could meet as sub-groups, and having a monthly meeting for the larger group during which members could share their progress on different projects, socialize, swap and share materials, demonstrate techniques and display their work.
She noted there already are some groups dedicated to particular crafts in the area and invited members of those groups to come to Cre8 Time meetings and share their knowledge and socialize with other crafters.
“It is a social club for crafters and for anyone interested in crafting,” she said.
Inches noted experience in crafting isn’t necessary for membership. Even those with no prior knowledge of crafting are invited to attend. At future meetings, Inches plans to have small, one-project kits available for a nominal fee for those who haven’t tried crafting before and therefore don’t have materials already on hand.
“I want to encourage people to get involved,” she said. “It’s really not that expensive, but you might want to make a $5 bracelet, but you might have to buy $20 worth of stuff to do it. Instead, I’ll have kits for people who want to try a craft and don’t have the materials.”
Inches also plans to take group photos and photos of crafts both in-progress and completed, for sharing on the Cre8 Time website.
There also will be a meeting at 10 a.m. March 7 at the Burgettstown library for those interested in sharing their craft knowledge with others or in volunteering during meetings.
