OES gets surprise visitor, gift

WELLSBURG – Members of the Wellsburg Chapter No. 23 Order of Eastern Star received a surprise visit from Army Sgt. Maj. Jayson W. DeWitt on leave from Afghanistan and visiting his grandfather, Kenneth DeWitt, past patron.

In August, the members had sent DeWitt and his men personal items that are not easily available to soldiers serving there.

In appreciation, he presented the women with an American flag that flew over the U.S. National Support Element in Kabul, Afghanistan, and a certificate in honor of their support during Operation Enduring Freedom. The certificate was signed by Army Brigadier Gen. Paul M. Nakasone and DeWitt.

Wellsburg held its grand visitation at the meeting, welcoming Dee Wanner, worthy grand matron, and Jim Savage, worthy grand patron of the Grand Chapter of West Virginia.

All the grand officers were in attendance, including Bonnie Kerr, past matron who is Grand Adah.

There were approximately 100 in attendance, including guests from Weirton, Bethany, Wheeling and Moundsville.

A dinner followed the meeting. Hostesses were Kimberly Kerr, Janice Swain, Kim Govey, and Allie and Devan Basil.
